The Italian designer Achille Castiglioni is the youngest of the three Castiglioni brothers. Like his brothers, Achille studies architecture at the Milan Polytechnic graduating in 1944. Achille Castiglioni works as an architect, but is primarily known as one of the most important Italian designers.
In 1944, Achille joins the practice founded by his older brothers, Livio and Pier Giacomo. As from 1952, Livio parts ways and goes his own. Pier Giacomo and Achille Castiglioni continue to realize numerous designs as a well-matched team.
In 1957, the exhibition "Colori e forme nella casa d'oggi" (Colors and Forms in Today's Home) is set up at the Villa Olmo in Como, where Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni present their vision of modern lifestyle. Pier Giacomo and Achille Castiglioni are especially successful with lighting designs. During 1962, the Castiglioni brothers design the famous Lamp “Arco”. In spite of the modern and light material of the lamp, a 60 kilogramme marble block is always necessary, to allow the ‘‘arch” a safer balance of weight.
After the death of his brother Pier Giacomo in 1968, Achille Castiglioni continued to run the practice by himself. Achille Castiglioni's designs are notable for their function, which rank high in aesthetics although their form is never neglected. "So sophisticated and so simple - I like that!" was how Achille Castiglioni describes his philosophy of design.
The Castiglioni brothers not only have a formative influence for later generations of Italian designers. Pier Giacomo Castiglioni teaches for 22 years (1946-1968) design at the Milan. While Achille Castiglioni teaches interior decoration and industrial design from 1982 till 1986, later holding an industrial design position at the Turin Polytechnic as of 1970 until 1980. The Museum of Modern Art owns many works by both, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni.
