Is it an original?” - A question asked very frequently by our customers. Well, the truth is that regardless from whom and at whatever price you purchase it for, nowadays, you will only obtain a revised reproduction or re-edition of furniture designs or prototypes made decades ago.
Our reproductions are exactly according to the original design whether in quality, dimension, and proportion. The only difference is that we do not stamp the name of the designer nor a serial number on the pieces, nor do we furnish a certificate of authenticity.
The so-called “originals” are simply the limited number of prototypes produced in the 20’s and 30’s which are currently only found in museums or private collections. If you are fortunate enough to find one of these prototypes at an antique market or second-hand shop, you will notice the pricing to be what you would expect to pay for a famous painting.
Few of the prototypes have anything in common with today’s reproductions. Back then, it was neither possible to make upholsteries that kept their shape, nor invisible welding seams or flawless chrome-plating. Hence, the reason most of the "originals" are lacquered gray.
Nowadays, polyurethane foams and sophisticated metal processing technology allow making perfect, comfortable furniture for a demanding public. Hence, it definitely looks and feels different than the few originals produced in the 20’s and 30’s.
